About the project
Buffalo Creek Ponds
In the summer of 2024, Freestone aquatics constructed three non-jurisdictional dams on Buffalo Creek in Parshall Colorado. The three dams ranged from 10’-12’ in height and 150’-250’ in length, creating over 3 surface acres of water storage for the customer. Each dam was equipped with an Agridrain water control structure to comply with state regulations for the calculated release of waters. Disturbed wetlands were mitigated by constructing wetland benches around the outside perimeter of each reservoir. Each wetland bench allowed for less than 1’ of water and was planted with a wetland specific seed mix to provide wildlife habitat for amphibians, birds, insects and macroinvertebrates. This increases biodiversity compared to steep sided ponds. Together, these design features ensure the reservoirs function not only as reliable water storage infrastructure, but also as ecologically beneficial systems that support long-term environmental health while meeting regulatory requirements.
